Welcome to the latest instalment of my 52 Bars in 52 Weeks Protein Bar Review Series. This week I taste tested and reviewed the Googys Apple Cinnamon Good Egg Protein Bar.

Is the healthiest protein bar I've reviewed so far? It's only got seven ingredients, and all of them are whole foods. It's got balanced macros, minimal saturated fat, and a decent 12g of protein per bar. It's also only $3.95 RRP per bar (and you can often get a better price at Goodness Me).

I've been wanting to try these for ages and am so excited to share this review with you. The Googys philosophy is hard to argue with – the brand operates on the belief that good food creates a good mood, for wellness of body and mind. As a nutritionist, I wholeheartedly agree. We are what we eat, but with the fast paced lives we all lead and the convenience of processed food, it's hard to consistently fuel ourselves with natural wholefoods.

I purchased this Googys Apple Cinnamon Good Egg Protein Bar from Goodness Me – the only online food store where every product is approved by a nutritionist. They have a tonne of great products that you could easily fill your pantry and fridge with for round the clock healthy food choices (not sponsored by the way – just a BIG fan).

If you'd like to give this bar a taste, Goodness Me has extended a 10% discount to make it a bit easier. Just enter 'HIKE10' at the checkout.

Let's check out the bar!

Protein Bar Taste Test

Protein Bar Appearance

The bar looks sticky. It's also a unique shape for a protein bar, which is neither here nor there but I couldn't not acknowledge it.

It's not exactly visually striking – it gives me ration bar vibes. But it also doesn't look gross. Solid neutral on the appearance.

Protein Bar Aroma

It smells like sweet cinnamon syrup. Is the sweetness apple? Honestly, this one took both testers ages to describe and we spent a ridiculous amount of time with this bar under our noses. In the end we concluded that it reminded us of hot cross buns or as if someone had a bowl of spicy sultanas under our noses. Does that help? Probably not a lot. It's somehow a mild smell with a lot of depth.

Protein Bar Texture

Once again this is another bar with no chocolate coating. I'm beginning to really appreciate and enjoy this aspect – especially when you're in the middle of nowhere with filthy hands and can't lick off the chocolate you lose to your fingers.

The Googys Bar looks like it will be sticky but it's more rubbery to bite into...and then it starts sticking to your teeth! Fortunately, it aggregates quickly as you chew and doesn't stay stuck. It's kind of like when you use Blue-Tack to collect other stray bits of Blue-Tack.

It has medium density but is mosly quite soft with occasional small nutty pieces breaking it up. I really liked it.

Protein Bar Flavour

Just as the aroma baffled the testers, so did the taste. It's really hard to describe but is overall quite fruity. It's subtly sweet but absolutely tastes healthy. The flavour is quite layered and is very moreish.

There are some hints of spice but it's hard to detect cinnamon specifically. My fellow taster alternated between being convinced it had apricot in it, to demanding I check to see if sultanas are on the ingredients list (they aren't), to finally concluding that it reminded him of fruit roll-ups – if it was possible to make a healthy one.

Rating out of 5 (0= terrible, 5= amazing): 5/5

As is the theme of this review, this score took a long time to decide on, and it was very nearly a 4.5/5. We didn't love the stickiness and the flavour confusion was real. It was hard to tell it was cinnamon & apple – it felt like we tasted just about every other ingredient out there except for those. But overall it was delicious. It was moreish, and we were both sad to finish the bar. It deserves the 5.

Nutrition Information Panel

Protein

With 12g of protein from egg whites, this bar is a moderate source of high-quality protein. Egg whites provide a complete amino acid profile, essential for muscle repair and recovery.

For hikers, this supports recovery post-hike but won't be enough for long-duration treks without additional protein. These are so healthy though that you could easily just eat two of them and it'd be a great amount of protein.

Carbohydrates

With 21g carbs, including 14.8g of natural sugars from dates and dried apple, this bar offers quick, natural energy. While beneficial for mid-hike energy boosts, the higher sugar content doesn't satisfty your need for slower-releasing carbs so you'll need to make sure you've had a quality brekky, lunch, or pair with low GI high carbohydrate snacks for best performance.

Fat

The bar contains 7.8g fat, primarily unsaturated, from almonds and cashews. This contributes to satiety and long-lasting energy. Nuts are also rich in magnesium, a key electrolyte for muscle function, making this bar a great choice for hikers needing sustainable energy. To be fair, most of us eat scroggin and are getting this anyway, but it's still good to see.

Fibre

With 2.4g fibre, the bar provides a little digestive support, enough to aid satiety but it's not a huge amount, unfortunately. The natural fibre in dates, nuts, and dried apple is great for gut health. Interestingly, the fibre in dried apple retains some pectin, which helps maintain blood sugar levels. It's unlikely to be enough to mitigate the energy rush but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Sodium

Sodium is low with 135g. It's a great addition to your day which should also include an electrolyte supplement to replenish sodium lost through sweat.

It does stick well to the wrapper and a little bit was firmly stuck to my bar so be mindful of this if you're snacking in low visibility so you don't end up eating part of the wrapper.

  • Cost per 100g: $7.18

  • Cost per gram of protein: $0.33

Flavour

5/5 (but was almost a 4.5!)

Consumption Recommendation

This bar is ideal as a pre-hike snack or during shorter hikes for a quick energy boost, thanks to its natural carbs and balanced macros. Avoid using it as the sole post-hike recovery option, as it doesn't provide enough protein or sodium for muscle repair and rehydration.

Eating two will mitigate that problem but you'll need to ask yourself if you need the energy boost right before bed. I'd aim for breakfast, lunch, or afternoon for this one.

Protein Bar FAQs

How is it possible to have only seven super healthy ingredients in a protein bar when most use so many artificial ingredients?

Whole foods like dates, egg whites, and nuts naturally provide flavor, binding, and nutrition, removing the need for artificial additives or sweeteners. If only more protein bars went this way...

How does egg white protein compare to whey protein?

Egg white protein is lactose-free and highly digestible, making it an excellent option for those with dairy sensitivities. While whey is faster-digesting, egg white also provides a complete amino acid profile.

Is 12g of protein per serving of this Googys Egg White protein bar enough to help me on a hike?

For shorter hikes, yes, as it supports muscle maintenance and recovery. For longer or more intense hikes, consider pairing it with another protein-rich snack or eating two bars for a total of 24g of protein.

How much protein should I be eating as an adult on a day when I do a moderately difficult 10km hike?

Aim for 1.4–2.0g protein per kilogram of body weight, ensuring protein intake is spread across meals and snacks to support muscle repair and recovery. For a 70kg adult, this equates to 98–140g of protein.

When's the best time for hikers to eat protein bars for performance and why?

High protein bars like this are ideal for pre-hike fuel or post-hike muscle recovery. The protein and fibre help stabilise blood sugar, providing sustained energy on tough trails or a protein boost right after a strenuous climb.
